Do students struggle to understand WHY they study a subject?

Are students not able to APPLY what is being taught?

Are students forced to mug up the topics?

Are the studies becoming boring and stressful?

Confirmatory nods for some or all of above questions, almost unanimously from educational fraternity, lead us to forming GrainEd in 2016.

GrainEd is an alternate and open education framework to drive in curriculum fundamentals in an enjoyable environment. Logically complete educational courses which integrate various subjects, are offered through ‘Known to unknown” pedagogic methodology. Professionals from various walks of life, join hands in this socially responsible venture and become voluntary mentors, designing and delivering educational courses. So weutilise the power of online education to augment formal schooling and that started well before the Pandemic!

Pillars of GrainEd pedagogy

Known to unknown

Typical ways of teaching begins with stating the subject/topic that is going to be taught, defining and explaining it. E.g. “Lets learn Quadratic equations today and start explaining the equation.” That’s stating ‘never heard of’ terms and terminologies and attempting to familiarise them to the students. Often students fail to relate to these unknowns, let alone placing them in the right context. We can call this pedagogic practice as “Unknown to known”.

GrainEd mentors encourage students to look at known terrains and help them reach conclusions by logical thinking and land them in newer horizons of knowledge. A host of tools including questions, exercises, demonstrations, videos, audio, visuals, role plays, debates etc. would be used for achieving this goal. Say, start from the video of a car race and then narrow it down to force and torque by successive probing. This is “Known to unknown” methodology. This helps students to understand WHY they learn a topic.

Integrated courses

In our system, curriculum objectives are compartmentalized bydividing them into Subjects, Year wise syllabi, Text books, Modules and Chapters. This is done for administrative ease. Tutors often take up the topics with an orientation towards exams, standardized tests and immediate need of coverage. Then we leave the herculean task of assimilating information acquired from multiple subjects and classes and deriving knowledge out of it, to poor students! The larger picture of ‘learning’ is lost in the process and the students, most often, fail to appreciate the process of education. Life changing innovations and scintillating creations which are proud assets of humanity, become unavoidable liabilities for the kids.

GrainEd pedagogy is based on integrated courses that transcend subject boundaries. Knowledge doesn’t know its division to subjects! For e.g. “Anatomy of Computer” course covers binary number system which is taught in Maths, Semi conductors which is a Physics topic and Computer hardware that comes in IT. “Science – Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow” covers Geo Science, Physics, Chemistry and Maths. “The art of money management” traverses through Accounts, Sociology, Economics and Maths. This method equips students with knowledge that can be applied.

Professional Mentors

Gap between schools where teaching happens and industry where knowledge is applied, is quite vast. Professionals apply what’s being taught in schools. They maintain their knowledge, current and relevant as it’s critical for their career progress. They know the lacunae of the educational system but seldom get a chance to intervene in an institutional manner. GrainEd provides that platform. Professionals being professionals, would apply their skills to improvise delivery after each session. This is a voluntary effort and they are doing it out of sheer passion. It’s the knowledge and passion of the mentor that inspires the students.

Student centric environment

Self-respect and freedom are key attributes for creating a friendly learning environment. The golden principle in GrainEd is that “every child is special and needs respect”. Encouraging students to ask questions without inhibitions forms the core of our methodology. Removing the burden of knowing only right answer makes a child free to express own thoughts. Real learning happens in such creative and free environments. And once a student discovers a method for effective learning that can help throughout the life!
